Encoompassing over 3 miles of beautiful and picturesque river, your romantic adventure a top your bamboo raft will have you traveling along untouched paradise taking you back in the time when sugar was king and rafts transported this precious cargo to merchant ships in the harbour.
The river is named after an Arawak Indian girl, a member of the tribe of Indians who were Jamaica's first known inhabitants and who called the island, Xaymaca, land of wood and water.
Legend has it, an old Arawak witch, who lived on the banks of the River Matibereon. Having heard tales of the Arawak gold, Spanish treasure hunters captured the witch to lead them to the treasure.
Pretending to comply she led them into a cave, then suddenly disappeared. Frightened, the Spaniards ran out of the cave but the river engulfed them. The witch then changed the course of the river forever. Passed on by mouth the legend still lives on.
Twisted translations produced the English version of river Matibereon to be - Martha Brae.
