Rennie Tours - Black River Safari
The Black River Safari tour starts by taking visitors up the Salt Spring, one of three tributaries that form the black river as well as one of Jamaica's most important waterways for transporting rum and sugar cane at one time.
But the biggest attraction on the Black River are the crocodiles that can live as long as 100 years. Because of this some have become known by local residents, such as Lester, a 15 foot long crocodile often seen nightly as he heads out to sea.
The waters you will see along your tour are filled with bull rush, giant fern, just one of 600 species found on the island of Jamaica and pancake lilies. Theses brackish water also allow for the growth of a mangrove forest having the roots of these forest trees cascade from high branches that reach down into the waters.
The forest environment being rich in plant, animal and bird life while the waters are home to snook and tarpon, reaching as large as 200 pounds provide the spear fishermen using a snorkel, mask and spear gun at the base of the mangrove roots swim in the dark river to bring in the day's catch.
The beauty of the South Coast of Jamaica, this you will discover on your 90 minute Black River Safari tour while traveling up Jamaica's largest navigable river and through what is Jamaica's largest wetland area, the Black River lower morass.
While the basic tour takes you six miles up the river, during which time a running commentary given by your tour guide on both the ecology and the history of the area guiding you with complete understanding, but ultimately the Black River Safari will be a un-forgotten experience on your behalf.
